The History of Dog Tags

For anyone interested, I have included the history of Dog Tags.

Enjoy Amy as it is very interesting reading.

What is D-Day?

D-Day . . hmmm (in my daughter's view) where people died.

Confused? Let me explain: Last Friday, March 29, my daughter Kristin went on a school field trip to the D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia. I gave her my camera for the day to take pictures for us to enjoy since we haven't been yet. I really wanted to see what kind of pictures she would take. Upon picking her up, I immediately asked for the camera. Here are some of the pictures she took. I was pleasantly surprised at how well she did. However, there were more shots of "friends" than the exhibit.
During the ride home, I decided to "quiz" her on what she learned. Friends ~ my daughter didn't learn a damn thing! I then asked if she bought anything at the gift shop and she said why yes, a necklace. While driving, I can't see it because she has it on so I asked what kind of necklace. She says, "I don't know. I think it is a dog necklace". Matt and I at the same time say, Dog tags? Yea, yea thats it. You know what is coming next; I asked if she knew the importance of the dog tags? not a clue. Matt and I then give her a history lesson of dog tags. I think my son was impressed with my knowledge on this subject. Matt then says Kris, did you learn anything at all, seriously? She says not really. I bet if I asked what some of her friends were wearing, she could tell me.
(sigh from mom) The rest of the way home, I think in my head what I could have done with the $30.00 we shelled out for her to attend this great memorial. ( New shoes, GAS, groceries, the list goes on and on!)

I love NATURE!!!

After working around the yard for about 3 hours yesterday, I was pooped and just couldn't do anymore. I wondered inside (saying under my breath) how tired I was of limbs, weeds, ponds, grass, rocks, gardening and the list goes on and on. Well, that is until I saw this out my kitchen window!
After aweing over the beauty at my back door, I went and visited with our rabbit Snuggles. I only held him briefly as he is really big and hates to be held. (well, they usually like to be held but our daughter, who just HAD TO HAVE this rabbit, hadn't held it since day 3 or 4.) I know many of you are saying why didn't you just say no? Well, two reasons:
  1. We are avid gardners and know that rabbit droppings are FANTASTIC for your plants.
  2. Look at him, could you say no to that face?

And finally, I had to take pictures of my daffodils. These are my most favoritist spring flower ever. (see the miniature one . . isn't she cute?)

Easter weekend updates:

Easter weekend was FANTASTIC! It could not have been any better.

Saturday morning around 10am my family started arriving. Once everyone had time to potty and explore our house, it was time for the kids to hunt those eggs! With the weather sunny and 70 degrees, it was perfect!
Good times were had by all! Unfortunately, the goods times have to end and everyone departed about 4:30ish for their trek back to Winchester. Before they all departed, we took a few family pictures. My younger brother and his family tried to kidnap Stewart but we rescued him!

After everyone left and I picked up around the house, I retreated to the couch. I didn't move the entire evening; well until I awoke at 8:45pm and went to bed! How sad is that? People, I am getting old! I honestly cannot hang with the big dogs.

On Sunday, JD began tilling the garden; getting it ready for this years crop! While JD tilled, the kids and I picked up rocks! After about an hour, I was done. I just couldn't do anymore. My body was telling me it absolutely could not handle anymore. Therefore, I listened and stopped. I was excited to get back to work to get some
R &R.

Happy Easter from The Sweet Family
May you all enjoy the Easter Holiday filled with
family, love, faith, marshmallow peeps
and all those hidden eggs!

It's almost here!

I am so EGG'STATIC that my family is coming to my house for Easter on Saturday. JD and I are going to hide eggs on over 4 acres which we think will be interesting and very challenging! We are going to pair up the kids and send them off with baskets and ATV' searching for that waskuwee wabbits treasures!! I am hoping the weather will be nice. Right now the forecast is afternoon showers for Saturday.
I have decided to change up the menu as I am so sick and tired of the ole' standby holiday foods.
Menu
Steak
Salad, Baked Potatoes,
Rolls & Desserts
See my kids' Easter picture? They were both so excited to have their pictures taken together! As you can see, I can't dress my children up in the cute little Easter outfits anymore. (Actually they both wined because I wanted a picture of them together) Luckily Survivor took a commercial! T E E N S UGH!!!!
Do you see their horns? Look real close!!!

The Tackle that wasn't ~

My Tackle it Tuesday was a bust! I had all intentions of getting the front of the house windows done but other issues came crashing down and killed my window cleaning mood!

We have been back and forth with our homeowners insurance due to the damage our house sustained during the last wind storm. To say the least, I blew when the last rep called us asking stupid questions like: Is your carport attached to your house? How high off the ground is the damage? OK, I don't want to sound like a complete B*t*h but what is a "carport"? Isn't it a "port" to park your "car"? Also he asked how high off the ground is the damage? OMG, I could totally feel the other Amy trying to intervene; but I kept my cool! Then he starting asking me questions about the construction. Here are some of my smarta** answers: First of all sir, I can't even read a tape measure therefore, I don't know. Secondly, the ceiling has this white stuff on it that looks like concrete but isn't. It may also be that stuff that my husband uses to fill the holes from all of the nails I slam into the wall for hanging pictures. Its white and it is really making a mess every time the wind blows. Yes, it breaks up like chalk and then everyone tracks it in the house. At this point, my husband says give me the damn phone and I begin laughing...It worked! (Seriously, I can't read a tape measure. Well that isn't totally true. If it is on the 1/2 or 1/4 ark, 'm good. IF it strays to the other lines, I'm lost. My husband has tried numerous times to teach me but I just can't seem to catch on . . . . . ~sucker~)

This morning when I woke up, I had high hopes for a better day. How quickly that was shot in the butt when I looked at the clock! I had overslept by 1/2 hour. It is now raining cats and dogs outside so the windows will not get done until the weekend. I guess my family will have to look at dirty windows! UGH!

Finally, it's here!!!

Tackle it Tuesday!!!

I'm on a roll! We finished the painting so now I am moving on.... YEP, tonight - I tackle (or begin) cleaning the windows. This is not going to be fun as my front windows are low enough for my dogs to constantly put their noses on while scanning the yard before their big break! My plan tonight is to get at least half done! (Only spoiler: rain all day tomorrow)

Good flicks!

This past weekend we rented a few movies and I wanted to share what I thought of two of them.

First we watched We own the night with Mark Wahlburg (yummy) and Joaquin Phoenix (yummy) and Eva Mendes. Absolutely fantastic.!!
We also watched Superbad. This is a very vulgar movie however, I thought it was one of the funniest movies I have ever seen.

Happy St. Paddy's Day

Well, I guess me looking at a calendar is asking too much! I get to work and see all of these people wearing green. One guy is wearing a green afro. I then realize that today is St. Patrick's Day. I am sooo bummed because MelisB gave me the cutest pair of St. Paddy's day socks (you only get one day to wear them) and I couldn't pull it off!

This weekend was so so busy! We burned LOTS of brush and did a lot of yard clean-up. We also cut up and split the wood from two trees that were lost due to the high wind storm a week or so ago.

It is so hard to believe that this weekend is Easter. Thank goodness for the three day weekend. The kids will be off from school for spring break Friday, March 21 - Wednesday, March 26. They would have been off all next week however, they had two snow days to make up.

Finally, HOW BOUT' THEM MILLBROOK PIONEERS!!! What an amazing accomplishment! On another note, one of the local high schools here, George Wythe Maroons, won their state tournament as well! Happiness is all around!!!

Quote of the Day

"I don't mind coming to work,
But that eight hour wait to go home is a bitch."
Need I say more?

Let's go MILLBROOK!!!

Millbrook Pioneers made our news!!!! Check out the story.

(just a little info, the Sweet Family knows Calvin and Clayton Rodney as we used to live a couple houses from them and in our neighborhood and would play wiffleball and high and seek. The Rodney's and their sister Octavia also used to spend days at our house watching movies and eating all our snacks. . . SMILE . . . GREAT KIDS!!!).

The Ultimate Blog Party!!!

Stop in and check IT out!

One Year today!

Today is the Sweet Family's "1" year in Barren Springs!

It is hard to believe that I have been away from home (Winchester) for a year. I still miss bits and pieces but I really don't think I would ever come back. Now if I could just find a DAMN JOB! This is another frustrating journey for me. However, I know that good things come to those who wait! (Lord I have been waiting patiently. But my patience is starting to wear thin).

Welcome back TOP CHEF!!! I missed seeing Tom Colicchio so much - YUMMY!

We are DONE!!!

Correction: Thanks MelisB for noticing that the "Grammer Queen" made a mistake.

We are done painting the whole house! It was a struggle finishing; however, it looks great.

Since Amy requested to see the paint color, I have decided to share pictures of our favorite room in the house (the den). Can you guess why? We also used this color in the kitchen and entryway.

This was one of the hardest decisions I have ever made in regards to paint color. However, JD and I both liked it and agreed on it. Can you believe it, after 17 years, we agree on something? Go figure~

Here is a picture of Matt driving me home Saturday evening from a local convenience store. He drove approximately 5 miles back roads and thehighway. He did fantastic and I couldn't be more proud of his responsibility and maturity while behind the wheel. Whew.... at least I still have about 3.5 years until it is Kristin's turn. YIKES!

Bad luck for me again . . in the name of a job

I have been informed by the company that I am currently temping at that the position that they told me was temp-to-hire now is not! They have decided to "do away" with the position. However, they would like me to stay on until the new system that takes my place, is in great working order. Uh hello, are they new to the workforce? Isn't it always a CYA decision? Not, whats best for them!

Jobs are scarce. Well, thats not totally true, I could work at a fast food establishment: $5.50/hour. Then there is the Sheetz option: $8.75/hour. (which I will say is looking pretty good right now: Remember MelisB: Pump 3 is on, please pay inside when your done). Another good note: I still LOVE the Taco Salads there. However the funniest jobs of them all are the ones at the hospitals, colleges, etc... they are requiring an Associates or Bachelors degree and the minimal starting pay is $7.50/hour. These jobs offer 1500 work hrs per year and NO benefits . . . lucrative huh? I really want to put on my cover letter, you are absolutely full of s**t if you think people are going to work for that! My husband says that I just need to be patient as I will find something. blah blah blah. On a lighter note, I do have an interview for a position at the same company I am at only at another location. Please say your prayers as I really don't want to go to work at Sheetz! GOD bless you!

Thanks also goes out to Jaime. After reading her post and ranting, I was inspired; therefore I am!

While I am still on my bandwagon, does anyone else think that American Idol sucks this year. The talent to me isn't as good. There are a few good singers but no one that I feel would benefit my cd collection (like Clay, Kelly, Daughtery). I really like little David Archuletta (and I vote for him religiously), however, my favorite is the ever so flamboyant Danny Noriega. What a queen! I love him to pieces!

Aunt Em . . was it a twister?

WOW is all I can say about last night! We had wind like I have NEVER felt before. Honestly! I was probably the scaredist (I know, not a word) I have ever been!

Upon going outside to assess the damage this morning, it was not as bad as it sounded. However, we did lose one shutter and our carport ceiling looks like finely shredded cheese. We have paint chips everywhere from the ceiling. It actually looks like it snowed. The basketball hoop was blown over and we had a few trees take one for the team! We will take another assessment this evening in the hopes there isn't anything else! Matt was nice enough to inform me that we will need to have another bonfire real soon. All the work we did a couple weeks ago was a waste. Its just as bad if not worse now. YEP, yard work again this weekend.

On a better note, we are almost completely finished painting. We only have our entryway/laundry and a half bath and we are completely DONE! I honestly could care less if we ever get it done. I am soooooo tired of painting and cleaning. Next: Cleaning the windows...ugh! I really loathe spring and the cleaning that I have to do!

Matt started Track and Field at school on Tuesday. He will be doing shotput and discus. He seems to like it a lot. After track & field . . .GOLF! He is sooo excited. He will be joining the Blue Ridge Junior Golf Tour so he is going to be ready for the golf team next school year. http://www.brjgt.com/
